| Societies have taken all sorts of limiting models of thinking for granted: notions of the inherent inferiority of certain races; or that only birds can fly; assumptions that women do not have the capacity to vote or the belief that mental illness or physical disease is caused by evil spirits inhabiting the body as punishment for sins. By now, these have been contradicted enough times to allow them to be swept away as working models, or indisputable facts that we build accepted social behavior on. Questioning the authorities can be dangerous! Not in the obvious sense, like questioning police brutality. Many of us can easily agree that violence is wrong. There are deeper issues that color our perceptions that we simply take for granted, or don't much consider. Unless you're a scientist yourself, or some kind of priest, you may never have questioned anything these sources have come to tell you. You may not want to. But we have arrived at a time when the science of "common knowledge" is not reporting what science has actually come to learn about our world. It was hard for Europeans during Galileo's time to accept that the sun did not revolve around the earth. When they did, it was a paradigm shift in their consciousness. It changed the way they saw their world. We can't imagine this now, since we have come to learn through science that this is the truth. Knowledge has never been a static thing! |
